When I participated in a University College Dublin Archaeological Dig which took place in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland in October 1998, I was facinated to be present at the discovery of part of a bog body dated around 500 AD. It was thrilling to realize that each layer of earth removed could tell us something new about the generations of people who had lived, worked and died there.

In my work I try to represent the three type of bogs in Ireland Fen, Raised Bog and Blanket Bog. Now exhibited is the felt work where I represent the texture/surface of the Blanket Bog. The bogs preserve our past and thus keep it alive. In my work I use hand made felt and hand stitch. Layers of felt are placed in certain areas of the piece to encourage the viewer to look more closely for hidden secrets, in the same way that Archaeologists search the earth for the secrets of the past. The structure of my work evolves from an attempt to portray to the viewer the beauty and mystery of Irish bog land.


Osallistuessani Dublinin yliopiston arkeologisiin kaivauksiin Tullamoressa, Offalyn kreivikunnassa Irlannissa 1998, olin innolla läsnä, kun kaivauksissa löydettiin osa upottavaa suota, joka oli peräisin 500 jKr. Oli henkeäsalpaavaa tajuta, että jokainen siirretty maakerros voisi kertoa meille jotakin uutta niistä ihmissukupolvista, jotka olivat eläneet, työskennelleet ja kuolleet siellä.

Töissäni pyrin esittämään Irlannin kolmea erityyppistä suota: lettosuo, keidassuo ja peittosuo. Nyt näyttelyssä on huopatyö, jossa on kuvaukseni peittosuon rakenteesta ja pinnasta. Suot säilyttävät menneisyyttämme ja pitävät sen elossa. Työssäni käytän käsin tehtyä huopaa sekä käsin kirjontaa. Huopakerrokset on sijoitettu työn joihinkin kohtiin rohkaisemaan katsojaa katsomaan vielä tarkemmin piilotettuja salaisuuksia, samalla tavalla kuin arkeologit etsivät maasta menneisyyden salaisuuksia. Työni rakenne koostuu yrityksestä kuvata katsojalle Irlannin suomaan kauneutta ja arvoituksia.
